About the Artist
Bethany Vu
Snakes engage my art via their stately cycle of youth, aging, metaphoric death, and resurrection. The snake’s shed is cast off and the serpent is ‘born again’, much like humans are always in a state of change. These blank, translucent imprints—these sheds—are lovingly realized and delicately carved into creations including paper, paint, textiles, and that metaphoric death.
The majestic, unusual beauty and transformation is depicted in my creations of recycled nature, and perhaps the contemplation of our own cycle of life and death. The discarded sheds and their fragility are a reminder of how precious life is.
Music (especially), poetry, and nature very often serve as muses and guides to my creations, and my three pet snakes often contribute materials. I am a self-taught artist with no formal training. All sheds are natural and ethically sourced.
